June is canine megaesophagus awareness month. Normally, when the animal's esophagus is functioning properly, it acts as a muscle and pushes the food down the esophagus into the stomach. However, when an animal has megaesophagus, the esophagus stays enlarged and does not push the food down to the stomach. Therefore, the food fails to enter the stomach and often stays in the esophagus, and is eventually regurgitated, or enters the lungs through breathing, causing aspiration pneumonia. It can feel like a scary uphill battle but I never felt more driven to beat the odds.

Megaesophagus is NOT a death sentence, it can be manageable! We had Harlow’s routine down to an art form with minimal regurgitations. I fully believe that if she hadn’t been born with other challenges like congenital gastroesphageal intussuception my 5am breakfast buddy would still be here.

If you have the opportunity to love a special needs animal the bond you build is unlike anything I’ve never come across in life, it is so so worth it. I will eventually seek out another ME dog in my life because no matter the effort you put in to care for them it will never come close to the amount of love you will receive.
